Dear Alex; It seems like you are you like or admire it a lot, and are much distracted by symbolism; real or imagined; and come dangerously close to a kind of mysticism. For although the Scriptures you reference have certain strong meaning in the direction you perceive, it is not, in my opinion, wise to let them consume us so that we avoid and neglect the completeness of the Doctrine of God.
  • Alex on Isaiah 61 - 7 years ago
Imo this Isa. 61/10 answers to the Transfiguration scriptures he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood which is the church, This shows that christ and his vesture are gonna be made 1 his vesture is the church, th bride. Children of israel(Jacob son's) went into captivity throughout history. They are still in captivity (bondage/serve slavery) till this day. Jeremiah 14:2 says Judah Mourns. Christ our savior who is from tribe of Judah is manifested to restore the tribes of Israel. All Gentiles will be amazed at end of the world that they mistreated his people. Isaiah 14 explains verses 5-6.
  • Irene123 on Isaiah 61 - 7 years ago
V.1 - " ... to proclaim liberty to the captives and the opening of prison to them that are bound ... " - is one and the same. Jesus (God) used 'doublespeak' quite a lot to make His meanings clearer. He knew His hearers were of varied understanding. 'Captives' are captives of sin, just as those in prison are; it's one and the same.

Those who believe in God and do His will will be rewarded abundantly and enjoy all the fruits of salvation. Yet thosr who are not Holy and robs the Lord will earn accordingly. Holy Spirit must always be our gurdian in achieving the Lord's rightousness.

The beautiful meaning of chapter 61 to me is that this is the material the old Religious leaders had and studied at that time. They should have known this as being a great prophesy to come. However, when Jesus appeared in front of them at the Temple in LUKE 4:18, He opened the Bible and "read" or told them exactly who HE was with rephrasing Isaiah 61 in front of them. In fact, I do not think He read it. He spoke it to them. He was telling them who He was, why He was born, and what He was to accomplish. They said later on in Luke that Jesus could not be that Person because they knew Him to be the "carpenter's son". Then, they took Him out of the Temple to try to kill Him in anger. he walked through them. It was not His time to die. The Prophesy of Isaiah 61 had been fulfilled.
  • Caroline on Isaiah 61:1 - 9 years ago
The favor of God has been forgiven freely to me and I need to go round and share this gift of grace with others who are going through life struggles such as sickness , lost of love ones , addiction, financial , etc. God is able to fix this situation no matter how big or small it may seem. Just don't loose your faith , keep on keeping on because his favor is more than sufficient for everyone who comes to him.

I want to know what the significance is of the first verse having "is " in italics. The spirit of the Lord "is " upon me... In the original Hebrew text, the word is "was ". The spirit of the Lord "was " upon me... But I cannot find any commentary that explains this seemingly benign change or reference to a change. And to the commenter who wrote about being a prisoner or a captive, I find that an interesting thought. But I do not like when the phrase under the law is used to speak of God 's law. It 's the law of sin and death that is opposite of grace. To say the law is opposed to grace is to say God is opposed to himself and that he makes bad policy that needs to be corrected. It is we that need to correct our miseducation. Thank you for your help.

  • Andrew on Isaiah 61:2 - 9 years ago
The year of the Lord, the year when God 's people will enter rest, just as the 7th day after 6 days of creation, the 7,000th year a day is a 1000 year for the Lord and a 1000 years is as a day for the Lord , the start of Mellenium of Christ 's reign. NO NO NO, not the New World Order, a counterfeit of the real Millenium.
  • Wambui Kemboi on Isaiah 61 - 10 years ago
The awareness the that the LORD will cause our righteousness to spring forth just like the way the garden does to the plants, I don 't have to struggle to be righteous, mine is to fully equip my heart with the word of God.
  • Marleen on Isaiah 61 - 10 years ago

  • Karon on Isaiah 61:3 - 10 years ago
A tree of strength has been planted in me through Jesus Christ that is available at the whisper of a prayer. It will change mourning to joy when I praise God for his spirit of strength that uplifts me. A joy comes when I depend on the God 's spirit of strength and not on my weak strength. Praise the Lord for His unfailing strength and goodness.

God 's spirit is so unique that the meek, the brokenhearted, the captive and the prisoners can also benefits from Him. this can be done through people like us. "Those in Christ Jesus ".
  • Donna Gallicchio on Isaiah 61:1 - 10 years ago
Here is some thinking outloud, it seems interesting. A captive is someont that is capture no fault of theirs. and a prisoner is something they have done to be in prison. Part of the verse say proclaim (maybe teach them) and the captives go free and the other part of the verse seems more involved -Open the door for them for them to go free. Matt 5:25 seems to say to me that if you are a prisoner, satan has put you there from being under Law instead of Grace. I don't know here but captive seems to be like something someone did to you like maybe unfaithful husband ruined your marragie and now you seem captive to hurt or unforgiveness. So maybe when we pray for people we should ask God if they are a prisoner or captive? prisoner or captive , satan did it and needs to be dealt with through God's power that is released through us. But just wanted to give the person some truth and keep them free.
  • Bradley schade on Isaiah 61 - 10 years ago
I think the moment that we begin to mourn over thee ashes of our character and have heaviness of heart for our lack of Christ likeness I believe at that moment God the Father begins to super naturally beautify us, put PRAISE in our hearts, and abundantly lavish upon us thee oil of joy and gladness, the personality of the HOLY SPIRIT is this OIL....!!!!
  • Ed1 on Isaiah 61:1 - 11 years ago

Isaiah 61 is a very nice scripture that tells us about Christ and our ministries (Believers)to this world.
  • Andrew on Isaiah 61 - 11 years ago
Verse 1 is talking about Lord Jesus Christ, NOT anybody.
  • Lori Cooper on Isaiah 61:3 - 11 years ago
The Lord showed me this verse after losing our seventh child at 19wks. Just dead at the ultrasound, even though we'd heard the heart 10 days before. Oh Lord, make this into a beautiful thing for your glory and splendor.
  • Evalena Jacobs-Latham on Isaiah 61:10 - 11 years ago
