    2 Sa.17:14 "Ahitophel" (2of 2)

God is just and God had sent Nathan to rebuke David whose sin despised his holy Name so it had to be cleansed forthwith. "Now therefore the sword shall never depart from thine house; because thou hast despised me, and hast taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be thy wife" and the key to the civil war breaking out between the father and son may be buried under political causes and Old vs. New and many other reason. It is same as the border and Immigration issues that bedevil American policies. The numbers deportations and political upheavals are merely sideshow that prevent the ungodly from understanding the truth. Then as now.

Ahitophel's advise was sound one. Did not God say earlier through Nathan the same? "Thus saith the Lord, Behold, I will raise up evil against thee out of thine own house, and I will take thy wives before thine eyes, and give them unto thy neighbour, and he shall lie with thy wives in the sight of this sun.:(vv.10-11) Ahitophel was suggesting the same. How come then his idea caused him to hang himself. Ahitophel had left off from following God and his wisdom was corrupted. He had to be numero uno and not God. The word of God had already set off events to pay Absalom, Ahitophel and also David. God reinstated David in his favor but consequences of sin will follow Solomon, Adonijah and the very division of the kingdom itself. "For we know him that hath said, Vengeance belongeth unto me, I will recompense, saith the Lord. And again, The Lord shall judge his people./It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God."(He.10:30-31)

Ahitophel must be seen as a warning to those false shepherds who for a pretence serve God but their heart is to be the president's man and wield great prestige and power as a result. God shall judge them.
