"But every man in his own order: Christ the firstfruits; afterward they that are Christ's at his coming./Then cometh the end."
The order is set by God, and his Holiness is made up of Power and Wisdom two principles held in balance by the Word or the Law. In the Sermon on the Mount he is shown presenting the doctrine of God in his person. He was there as the Word become flesh. So the Spirit gives him a context, the mountain signifies just that. " For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled."(v.18) This fulfilment refers to the end which comes in a series which we shall discuss in another post.
The Spirit presents Moses and Aaron in context of Jesus Christ so the mount plays a very role which is set forth by the Spirit for our spiritual instruction in righteousness. First we have the death of Moses. "And die in the mount whither thou goest up, and be gathered unto thy people; as Aaron thy brother died in mount Hor, and was gathered unto his people:/Because ye trespassed against me."(De.32:32-51). The mount symbolizes the Rock which is Person specific. "For their rock is not as our Rock, even our enemies themselves being judges."(32:31). St Paul refers to the spiritual Rock and it was Christ(1 Co.10:4)
We can see from the emblem of the mountain in Matt.5:1 the Spirit instructs us that he as the stone cut not with hands came from the Mountain of God. and shall stop only with Zion the holy habitation of God. So God allows Moses to Zion from far, "Yet thou shalt see the land before thee; but thou shalt not go thither unto the land which I give the children of Israel."(32:52) The Spirit sets before us the Promised Land literal and the spiritual as well.
