The four winds signify the events on the earth are set in motion by God, "For, behold, the LORD will come with fire, and with his chariots like a whirlwind, to render his anger with fury, and his rebuke with flames of fire." (Is.66:15) We have another instance, and whirlwind presages no good for ungodly nations, "behold, the four winds of the heaven strove upon the great sea./And four great beasts came up from the sea, diverse one from another." The number 12 signifies Gospel. The four and twenty elders are set down as memorial before the throne. (3x8=24) The number indicate the lower parts where the Spirit of Christ preached to the souls in prison. Heaven earth and lower parts hold as one in his Son.
