Presumably, Jesus here is merely stating a scientific fact, rather than suggesting that it would be desirable for us all to have such faith.
Because St John says something similar, but in the context "Yes, faith can do anything, but it is worthless without love" (Charity, caritas, love):
"Though I have all Faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have no Charity, I am nothing." 1 Cor. xiii. 2.
James says that faith without works is worthless, but John's p***age implies that neither lead to salvation, but love does:
James 2:14 "What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him? 15 If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, 16 and one of you says to them, �Go in peace, be warmed and filled,� without giving them the things needed for the body, what good[a] is that? 17 So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead".
