With respect and affection . I'm not sure how much of a Bible student u r , wether or not u have been reading it regularly ? Here r a few verse for u , hope they r helpful : Jer Ch 5 V 1-4 , all of Hosea Ch 4 , Isaiah Ch 29 V 13-15 and Matt Ch 15 V 7-9 . I think it means a few different things , firstly don't use His name as an expression of annoyance or anger etc in the same way that u would use a curse word . Don't ever presume to speak on His behalf unless u r actually directly quoting what He has actually said in scripture , don't assume to know what he would say and lastly don't profess to b a Christian if u r not and don't even want to b . These r just my feelings about it .

The Lords name is Holy. It is to be reverenced above that of earthly kings or even your own mother and father. It is to be honored. It's to be feared. Father forgive us....

I tell my grandchildren, nieces & nephews, if your not

    1.talking TO Him in prayer,

    2. praising His name,

    3.or telling someone about Him,

    then don't say His name!

Actually Donna, your comment was spot on. In Hebrew, the word for 'vain' is translated as 'emptiness, without purpose'. And this means that since the LORD's Name is Holy, Separate, Special, as no other name can be, when His Name is spoken, written, or referred to in any way, we need to give utmost care & reverence to His Name. So, your advice to your grandkids, etc., is very apt & hopefully be brief enough for them to recall it whenever they're found in that position to use God's Name. And they might even correct other children in their company when they misuse His Name.

    Luke 24:11, Matthew 12:36,

"in vain" could mean without faith,
