Is the spirit and the soul the same thing, I've search and search scripture, I've always been told that the soul is laid to rest an the spirit goes to Jesus until the trumpet sound and the souls in the grave first open
Krystin I'll present the scripture and you decide man originally was a 3 part Genesis 2:7 formed dust of the
ground and breathed into nostrils breath of life soul which is breath life nothing to do with the spirit which is
eternal. Genesis 1:27 God created man in His image = John 4:24 God is Spirit quote from Jesus Christ, this is not
saying man was a God this is saying with spirit man had a connection with God who is Holy and spirit not of the senses.
When man Adam and eve died in Eden what they lost was their spiritual connection with God the creator and became
body and soul life. When jesus Christ fulfilled His ministry it became available for man to become born again of Gods
gift which is holy spirit so man again had a spiritual connection with God. As it says in 1 Corinthians 2:14 the natural
man cannot know experiencial knowledge the things of God because there is no spiritual connection. When we are born again we receive the spirit of holiness Gods Gift or Holy Spirit wehich is eternal life spiritually.
Hi Krystin. The Bible speaks of our persons as having a body, soul, and spirit, as Bro Dan says with his Scripture citations. I read a little on this by googling the matter. You could do that to read from some of the sources I did.
So, my understanding is along these lines:
The body is the physical part of us made up of matter: atoms, molecules, chemicals, DNA, etc. that form our body that is seen, felt and tangible to the five senses.
Our soul is a spiritual part of our being that includes: mind, will, emotions, thoughts, reasoning, logic, and consciousness of self.
Our spirit is a spiritual part of us that connects us to God in communion, faith, and the conduit through which we receive of all God gives us spiritually. It is the part of us in which the Holy Spirit dwells after He regenerates us. It holds our conscience, our unity with Christ, the power of the Holy Spirit and spiritual gifts He bestows.
All three of these aspects of our being interact with each other as they are distinct but not isolated from each other.
Before we are converted, our soul and spirit are dead to God. We cannot have fellowship with Him and are enemies of God, slaves to sin, and unable to come to God on our own. After our regeneration by the Holy Spirit and conversion our soul and spirit is made alive. We are no longer enemies of God but are adopted as a child of God. Then we can come to know God, have power to overcome sin, live according to the Spirit, understand spiritual matters in God's word an in teachings from others such as pastors, friends. etc. We are now able to worship God in spirit and in truth, lift up faith-filled prayers , have unity and community with other believers.
When we die, our body decomposes into dust, our spirit goes to God, from whom it came. I am not sure what happens to our soul. But when we are resurrected, our body is resurrected incorruptible and united with our soul and spirit.

Hi Krystin, the soul and the spirit are almost inseparable except if you are Yahweh, Jesus, or The Spirit itself. When you die your fleshly body goes back to the earth. Yah calls your soul and spirit to heaven. Your soul contains your unique aspects that makes you, you. You don't lose these things. I know, I know, we just have to learn to get used to ourselves Lol.
I am sure you will get different replies on this, my understanding is close to what is in your post. Soul and spirit are two different words but seem to think of being the same and are hard to separate in our mind. What happens to these when we die there are different understandings, does the soul sleep in the earth with the body, or is it immortal and go to two different places?
The word soul in Hebrew is nephesh meaning a soul, living being, life, self, person, desire, passion, appetite, emotion. The Greek word psuche meaning the soul, life, self, a person's distinct identity.
The word spirit, the Bible writers used the Hebrew word ruach meaning breath, wind, spirit, or the Greek word pneuma also meaning wind, breath, spirit, when writing about the spirit.
Genesis 2:7 And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.
The spirit goes back to God Ecclesiastes 12:7
The Holy Spirit seals us until when? Ephesians 4:30
We are buried mortal, dead, in corruption and we are raised immortal incorruptible 1 Corinthians 15:42-44
All consciousness ends when we die. Psalm 6:5Job 14:12-14Job 17:13-16Psalm 89:48Psalm 115:17Ecclesiastes 9:5-10
We sleep in the dust until resurrection day, the day of redemption. 1 Corinthians 15:511 Thessalonians 4:141 Corinthians 15:52-54
God raised Jesus from the dead after three days and three nights, so, Romans 8:1 But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.
Have not found any scripture that says we or our soul or spirit is immortal, may someone else provide it if it is in the bible.
Krystin I have seen to schools of thought on this. Scripturally this is what's written then you decide. John 4:24
Jesus Christ said God is Spirit you can't see taste touch smell or hear spirit in the senses. In Genesis 1:27 God created
man in His image it doesn't man became God it just means that man had a point of contact with God. Now in Genesis
chapter 2 verse 7 it says that God formed man of the dust of the Ground the body and then breathed into his nostrils
the breath of life air inhale and exhale and man became a living soul. In Genesis after the downfall man died spiritually
because he lost his spiritual connection with God, he could still breath air and had a body but he had no spiritual
connection to God. In true science everything goes back to its original point so when a christian falls asleep I.E. dies
the holy spirit goes back to God who gave it born again, you take your last breath and you body goes back eventually
bones take a long time to dust. From dust thou art and unto dust thou shalt return. Now some believe the spirit and soul are one in the same I don't see that biblically because spirit life is eternal and breath life will end in this world.
Based on scripture it tells us that the body, soul, and spirit, are (3) three seperate entity's.
1 Thessalonians 5:23
"And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ."
Luke 1:46-47
And Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord, And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.
Since God is spirit we communicate to Him with our spirit.
Our soul and spirit will go on to our next life.
Our body is temporary, and goes back to the dust when we die.
Good question, Krystin. I will try to do a little research and get back to you. I hope others will respond to you in the men time with good explanations.
dust thou shalt return and the spirit goes back to God who originally gave it. In the resurrection dealing with the
church body of Christ we are put back together in totally different incorruptable bodies 1 Corinthians 15:50-54.
