So, in verses one and two he is basically saying 'don't do charity to the poor just to increase your public image in front of your peers.' right? So, if you want to donate to the homeless don't go around tooting your own horn (bragging or boasting) to get people to think you're a good guy.
If so, then I am already falling short of God's glory. I did a good deed a while back and I went and told almost everyone about it. I suppose I should repent for this. Great lesson Jesus gave here.
Yes Johnny, you've understood this verse well. The point was that if we are genuinely concerned for another (whether a homeless person, a minister of God's Word, a poor friend or relative), we will do it quietly, even inconspicuously, because our motive is from love & that the praise from that needy person, goes to the Lord for touching some heart to help another one out. By alerting others to our 'good, generous acts of love' may indicate a false or dual motive for giving, to which the Lord says that you will not receive the praise of God.
Though I think that from your experience the Lord's sees your conviction over this matter & the lesson you've learned, so that God's blessings will be multiplied to you for your consideration of others in the future. Blessings.
