The background to why Absalom wanted to kill his father, King David, would be too long to share here. I recommend you read 2 Samuel from Chapters 13 to 18 to get the full picture.
But in a nutshell: Absalom had his step-brother Amnon killed as revenge for Amnon's incest with Absalom's sister (Amnon's step-sister). As the older brother, Absalom would have been next in line to the throne after David but David learned prophetically that his younger son, Solomon, would be the next king. This caused Absalom much anger & he sought to kill his father David.
Absalom by this time had gathered a very large following & an army as well. David now feared his son, but still loved him & wanted him kept safe. However, in the midst of battle between the armies of David & Absalom, Absalom rode fast on his mule & his long flowing hair got caught in the low branches of a tree on which he hung. And one, Joab, then thrust three arrows into the helpless Absalom so that he died. King David was in great grief after getting news of the death of his son & we have that much quoted cry of his: "And the king was much moved, and went up to the chamber over the gate, and wept: and as he went, thus he said, O my son Absalom, my son, my son Absalom! would God I had died for thee, O Absalom, my son, my son!".
