We see these names, Urim & Thummim mentioned in various passages (e.g. Exodus 28:30, Leviticus 8:8, Numbers 27:21). Not much is known about them (there is even ignorance & debate amongst the Jews about this), except that they were likely stones (maybe precious stones) that were placed in the Jewish high priest's "breastplate of judgement"; sometimes referred to as the "breastplate of decision". Within that breastplate were also the names of the 12 tribes of Israel, so it appears that there might be a connection there, where the high priest used these stones to determine God's Will in certain situations concerning Israel.
How God chose to guide the priest to a correct judgement/decision is not told us: whether by the appearance of Light (Urim) or Perfections or declaration of Truth (Thummim). In 1 Samuel 28:6 which you referred to, we read of King Saul making enquiry of the LORD, but the LORD did not speak to him, whether by dreams, nor by Urim, nor by the prophets. This then seems to be some of the ways that God revealed His Word to His people, and these stones, Urim & Thummin, were used by the High Priest to learn the answer from God for the people.
Sure Alex, In Numbers 27:6-11; & Chapter 36 it states that there is a controversy about the inheritance for the daughters of Zelophehad.... Their father dies and they are worried about receiving their inheritance.... So Moses seeks more insight from the LORD and gets it... It is new revelation.... Apparently, if the widow marries again and her new husband is from the same tribe as the widow and dead husband, the daughters are able to receive the inheritance as if their father never died.....
Jesus doesn't have an 'earthly' father(seed)to pass the tribeship to him; so if Mary marries Joseph I was thinking that this same new revelation would apply to Christ qualifying to be from the tribe of Judah.... The woman does not determine what tribe the children will be of; it is the father, Matthew 1! Jesus Christ's Father was Jehovah, and not Joseph..... I still think it was by "oath" that Jesus qualified to be a Prophet, Priest and King; and that is what qualified him to be of the tribe of Judah- by 'oath'!
I see that both of your questions are about firstborn. I was always under the assumption that it was the firstborn child of mothers who were still giving birth (in other words just children) that died; of human and animal offspring. I suppose that could be conjecture on my part. Pharoah was kind of the last standout in a way; it doesn't appear that in the Exodus he personally went all the way out into the Red Sea and perished with the rest of his army.

I am not aware of a firstborn son having a scriptural demand; but a cultural one as to obtaining the greatest blessings. Apparently Reuben and Manasseh had the same thing happen to them. He brings blessings and curses in regard to many things such as childbirth; results of war; food resources and other things based on obedience or disobedience. He has used children such as Samuel to rebuke the evil house of Eli and his sons (which God asked him to do the FIRST time he heard His voice audibly). He has used a donkey to rebuke a madman prophet Baalam who was able to see an angel of God which the man couldn't detect. He chose a sheepherder to be the King of Israel; the last of all the sons who his father had to be prompted to appear. And the ceremonial laws were preempted by the Divinity of Christ; who is the "Lord of the Sabbath" ( Mark 2:27-28). God is not a respecter of persons ( Romans 2:11). There is even a verse where women who didn't have male relatives asked for part of the inheritance ( Numbers 27:2-7). And one where those who ridiculed Moses Ethiopian wife were dealt with ( Numbers 12:1). Bible culture shock!

We see in Revelation 2:9 and Revelation 3:9 Jesus does not care for those who call themselves Jews when they are not. Jesus came from the tribe of Judah Isaiah 11:1-10 2 Timothy.2:8 Revelation 5:5. Hello Jeremiah. This account that you refer to, begins at John 3:10, as Jesus continues His talk with Nicodemus. Jesus has just given him a very strange Word (or, concept): that this new spiritual re-birth from God has nothing to do with a physical re-birth. And so when Nicodemus enquires further, Jesus states, that as a master (i.e. teacher or doctor of the Law) in Israel, he should have understood & be conversant with such a Truth. He should have known of God's Spirit working upon & within many people (e.g. Numbers 27:18; Judges 3:9,10; 1 Samuel 10:9,10; Ezekiel 36:26-28; Isaiah 11:1-5); that the self-same Spirit Who could come upon people could also one day give them a new Spirit within them to worship God & live through His Power - a new life acceptable to God, even as God gave His Spirit to accomplish His Purposes in those of olden days.
Then Jesus continues to speak with Nicodemus; that what he is hearing now is coming from One Who knows & Who has seen the working of God's Spirit. Hi Irene; What the daughters of Zelophehad were saying to Moses, was that their father was not a part of the wicked rebellion of Dathan, Abiram, and Korah; (which was as it were, a high-water-mark of the intense envy, hostility and unbelief generally in the whole Nation of Israel); and that "he died in his own sins," I take to mean, generally, as we all have sinned. Num. 26:3 - states that Manasseh died in his own sin; I went to 'Got Questions', but they didn't even mention a sin. I wonder what it was. God's ways are not our ways. He had ordained that Moses will take the Israelites out of Egypt up to a point on the way to the Promised Land and Joshua will take over command around Mount Abarim. God implemented this plan in Numbers 27. This tells us that we must leave everything to God and let Him have His way in our life, just as Moses did.
Moses resignedly gives over the government of the children of Israel to his right-hand man, Joshua, as the Lord commanded. This expression of prize meekness is reminiscent of Christ who died, resurrected and ascended into Heaven to summon our Comforter, the Holy Spirit.This, among others, is an attitude which every born-again minister ought to have.
God is full of mercy and just. He feels what will feels. That is why he listen to the demands of the daugters of Zelophehad. We should learn to do the same as his children. Also God expect us to speak as his children and present our desire to him in the most modest way.
We are certainly living in the time of grace and mercy such a faithful man, the meekest man on earth but yet because of one disobedient he mist the promise land. thank you Jesus for extending mercy because we would all be lost.

Moses intercede for d people bt there is no one to intercede for him. Despite d fact that he will not get to d land he still pray for a leader to lead d people in his absence , what a great man of example .
God allowed Moses to see the Promised Land. But already God had said that Moses would never enter it ( Numbers 20:12). God reminded Moses why he would not enter the Promised Land. It was because Moses had not obeyed God at Meribah. So like the rest of his generation, Moses would die before he could enter the Promised Land.
From my understanding of the reading, God needed
Moses to complete his calling before he joined
Aaron. They both displeased him in the wilderness
of Zin. Because he loved both of them so dearly
due to their faithful service, their deaths were
in honor and peace still before the people.

Then Jesus continues to speak with Nicodemus; that what he is hearing now is coming from One Who knows & Who has seen the working of God's Spirit. And further (in John 3:13), Jesus says that there has been no one to have gone into Heaven to learn of these things & bring them to people, but only the One Who was always in Heaven & has come down from Heaven.
Jesus' Words here don't just speak of life after death, but specifically about those who did rise (whether in spirit or in the first resurrection), who did not return back to share this Truth about rebirth with them; people living now could not learn this Truth from anyone, but from the Son of Man Who is the Son of God, coming from God & bringing it to man. And Nicodemus should have understood at least a little of what Jesus was saying to him, because of his knowledge of the Scriptures.
And yes, true, there'll be a day when God will bring forth a new Earth, devoid of any stain of evil, where all of Heaven & Earth will reside ( Revelation 21:1-7), and all sinners (unrepentant, remaining enemies of God & the Cross of Christ), will only be found in the Lake of Fire (v8).
