"he saith unto him, Out of thine own mouth will I judge thee." Jesus defines that precept in Matthew."But I say unto you that every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words, thou shalt be condemned." Matt. 12:36-37. James defines the 'tongue' problem in James 3:1-12. Be careful how you speak.

Jean (cont.); Better to take the low place, and let the LORD exalt you if and when He sees fit to do so, FOR HIS OWN PURPOSES AND GLORY! In the following verses is expounded to us how and why that is. We need to be brought under subjection and obedience, like a ship by its rudder, and a horse by the bit in its mouth. The uncontrolled tongue has power, and shows how undisciplined we really are.

Jean; "My brethren, be not many masters, knowing that we shall receive the greater condemnation." Jesus said that whoever of us wishes to be great, let him be servant of all; just as He Himself came, not to be served, but to serve. By taking a place of leadership among the Saints there comes the demand of God with it to be an example of the things with which you teach and lead others.

Verse 16: Jealousy and contentiousness give way to terrible acts and attitudes. We must guard against such traits.

YES, servant! as it is written; "Many good works have I shewed you from my Father; for which of those works do ye stone me?" John 10:32; and "For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them." Ephesians 2:10. Also: Matthew 5:16; 1 Timothy 5:10,25; 6:18; Titus 1:16; 3:8,14; Hebrews 10:24; 2 Timothy 3:17; James 3:13; etc.

I have been struggling with controlling my tongue so much lately...my living situation is such that for now I am forced to live in close proximity to a couple of unbelievers and I repent and do it again...and its true...it causes so much strife and damage for such a small member...lights huge fires like these verses describe...but praise the Lord I am truly grateful for His chastisement...we learn

an interesting view is, although God does not strike us dead today on this fashion the results can be as damaging when we attempt to function in a role of ministry we are not ordained to... James 3:1 (KJV)

3 My brethren, be not many masters, knowing that we shall receive the greater condemnation.

BSP; YES! When someone has it in their heart to take the lead, it is a good thing; and for the honor of that place we are to hearken to them and give them double honor, for their labor in the Word. But it is also imperative that they be pure and upright men, and really know of what they speak and teach, as the Lord demands greater from those to whom more is entrusted. Matt. 23:2-3 confirms this.
  • BSP on James 3 - 7 years ago
Verse 1 shows that those men who are taking the lead have a greater responsibility before Jehovah God.

The Jews' "religion" is not of God! They are the descendant of those who slew the Heir, and seized control of God's vineyard for themselves; ( Matthew 21:38; Mark 12:7; Luke 20:14). They are Israel's Rulers which CAUSE THEM TO ERR; for they themselves do not enter the kingdom of God, and they forbid and hinder everyone who does. They do not submit to God, are contrary to all, and do not please Him!
  • Insight777 on James 3 - 7 years ago
V12, Jesus taught James that 2 religions can not be 1 religion. Judaism does not morph into Christianity. They are completely different religions, defining God in completely different ways.
The Jews will always fight. They will fight believing, regardless of what pain and suffering they cause, they are directed by God. If that was truth no one would know the name of Jesus.
  • Insight777 on Zechariah 3 - 7 years ago
V10- Jesus = vine. John 15:1 I am the true vine, John 15:4 Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me. The fig tree= Israel, James 3:12 Can the fig tree, my brethren, bear olive berries? either a vine, figs? so can no fountain both yield salt water and fresh. The 2 religions are separate.

Charles; I appreciate reading your post. Humility is always honest, and for us to wait on the Lord for His direction as to our service; this is great understanding. In Hebrews 11, the part where Paul talks about Moses; its interesting how Moses apparently had already some idea that God was going to use him to deliver Israel from Egypt; and he was called by God, the meekest of men: and he waited!

    Abandon the laws of what?
  • Maria Sanabria on James 3 - 7 years ago
I believed that James the Justice books are clear how we need to follow the laws. I really don't think that Jesus told us to abandon the laws.

This is one of my favorite verses, in all it means for us to behave ourselves, toward one another, and toward all. The older I get, the more I realize how precious life is, and how important it is to let the mind of Christ be in me, with every single person I meet: which is my duty of obedience that I owe to Jesus for dying on the cross for me; and to every man made in His image, He wants to save.

Because the "wise as serpents" quote ISN'T a word for word EXACT quote - I pray someone doesn't jump all over me ............
  • Irene123 on James 3 - 7 years ago
Jas. 3:17 - " ... wisdom ..... is ... pure, peaceable, gentle, and easy to be entreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy." Wisdom; we all desire to be wise; "be ye therefore wise as serpents but harmless as doves; wise in our speaking, thinking; but harmless in the same.
  • Charles hendrix on James 3 - 7 years ago
Verse 1 argues that we should NOT all try to be teachers because we are judged more harshly than others, because we are teaching. I declined leading classes in my Sunday School because I felt inadequate in my knowledge and wisdom of the word. The Tongue is a potent thing,Even well intentioned speech when not biblically informed can have disastrous consequence .

Even though the tongue is such a small member of the human body, we can not tame it. We are all imperfect and so we will all say imperfect things. We must work hard to try and control our tongue the best we can.
  • Irene123 on James 3 - 7 years ago
The tongue can no MAN tame - but the Lord Jesus can -IF one follows Acts 2:38 and allows the Holy Ghost (spirit of Jesus) to live in us. THAT'S where true Christians get their power. And not hanging around old sinner friends, but PRAYING for them and letting them feel His love in you in witnessing to them.

Rev.Miller: This man is not Christian. for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh. The tree is known by their fruit. Matthew12:33-34. V 37: for by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words Thou shalt be condemned. Called: John6: 44; forgiving 1John1:9; Baptize you with the Holy Ghost and fire Matthew 3:11. "You will know"! Impossible not to know! 2Corinthians 5:17.
  • Rev Franklin Miller on James 3 - 8 years ago
Please, readers, doe NOT use verse 8 as as a scripture that allows you to use foul language. As a minister, I've heard this verse used to justify a fellow Christian man who cursed quite frequently. Try and explain this reasoning to the Lord when you meet Him on Judgement Day. Better get it right down here because you won't have the chance up there. Merry Christmas and a safe prosperous New Year!!!
