Matthew 24:34 - Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass, till all these things be fulfilled.
The word generation itself has no association with years at all, unless you put the years with it. The word generation means race or kind of people. GENEA is the word, and it means a race or kind of people. Basically, what He saying here, is this kind or race of people (the Jews), shall not pass away until all these things be fulfilled. They are His elect. They are His protected people, His chosen people, and He will fulfill His promises to them.
Matthew 24:43 - But know this, that if the goodman of the house had known in what watch the thief would come, he would have watched, and would not have suffered his house to be broken up.
The word goodman is actually the house master in Greek. If the House master had known in what watch the thief would come, he would have watched, and would not have suffered his house to be broken up.
Matthew 25:1 - Then shall the kingdom of heaven be likened unto ten virgins, which took their lamps, and went forth to meet the bridegroom.
They had no lamps in those days. In those days it was a torch. It was a stick with cloth wrapped around it. And they would soak the cloth in oil, and they would light it. And they would bring an extra bottle of oil along and keep it lit.
Matthew 25:24 - Then he which had received the one talent came and said, Lord, I knew thee that thou art an hard man, reaping where thou hast not sown, and gathering where thou hast not strawed:
The word strawed means to scatter, DIASPORA. You gather together where you haven't even scattered anything. That is a hard man!
Matthew 25:27 - Thou oughtest therefore to have put my money to the exchangers, and then at my coming I should have received mine own with usury.
He says to give your money to the exchangers, and then at my coming, I should have received mine own with interest. That is what usury means, with interest.
Matthew 24:28 - For wheresoever the carcase is, there will the eagles be gathered together.
A better translation would be "vultures be gathered together." This verse could not be fulfilled until the mid-1990s. There are now carnivorous birds in Israel, in order for that to be fulfilled. That will happen when Jesus comes and He defeats His enemies in the battle of Armageddon.
It's prophesied, the coming of Christ, and the prophecies of these carcasses. You can see it in Ezekiel 39:17, all of Chapter 34 of Isaiah, and as it happens in Revelation 19:17-21.
Matthew 24:31 - And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.
Just some technical information just to show you how good this passage is:
He is going to send His angels out with a great sound of a Shofar. It's a ram's horn. Now in the Greek text, the word "sound" is in brackets, which means it was added to the text by some unseen person who doesn't understand the fact that the word "great" modifies the trumpet. It is called a great Shofar.
The prophecy is in Isaiah 27:12-13. It says the great Shofar will blow, and the Lord will gather His people from the four corners of the earth. So that is very important because that's a prophecy that the Jews looked for. It says He is going to gather them together, his elect (that would be the Jews), from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other, north, south, east, and west.
Matthew 24:1 - And Jesus went out, and departed from the temple: and his disciples came to him for to shew him the buildings of the temple.
Verse 1 tells us that that Jesus went out and was Departing. Notice the literal translation. It shows an Imperfect Tense, was departing. He was in the process of leaving the temple grounds when the disciples came to Him to show Him the buildings of the temple.
Matthew 24:4 - And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you.
The word "deceive" in the Greek is not the normal word for deception. It is the word for misleading. Don't let anybody mislead you about what's going to happen in the last days. That is very important! Jesus gives the reason why in Matthew 24:5.
Matthew 24:8 - All these are the beginning of sorrows.
The word sorrows in Greek, is the word for birth pains, when a woman goes into labor. But Jesus calls them birth pains because they start out very light, further apart, and then the more a woman gets into the time of giving birth, the more intense it becomes, and the more frequent they become. So, Jesus said these are just the beginning.
Matthew 24:13 - But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.
The literal translation from the Greek is, but the one who has endured, not the one who will, but the one who has endured unto the end, this one will be saved. The first thing is, because it is an Aorist Participle, it shows the proof of those who are saved, and it matches the rest of the teachings in the New Testament. The person who is saved WILL endure to the end.
Matthew 24:25 - Behold, I have told you before. Literally in the Greek, behold I'm telling you ahead of time, so that you know when it happens.
Matthew 22:38 - This is the first and great commandment.
Well, it is not a commandment. Some say that God commanded it, just like He said let there be light. He says in the OT, that my people WILL LOVE, because I will put my Spirit in them, and I will write my laws on their heart, and they will love me.
You see, God gives us the ability to love Him because in the natural, we do not have that capability. So, Jesus says this is the first commandment. Now, how many years have we gone thinking that the first commandment is a commandment? But the commandment is YOU WILL. There is no choice there! It is not an invitation like I hope you will, or could you, or should you.
You will, because God's Spirit is the one who has the love. He is the one who loves. And when you have God's Spirit in you, you are in God's love. Plus, we have to be sensitive to the fact that AGAPE love is not an action, it is a person.
Matthew 23:5 - But all their works they do for to be seen of men: they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the borders of their garments,
A phylactery is a small box. In the OT, God told the children of Israel to keep the commandments of God fresh in their minds, and fresh on their foreheads. So, what they did was they took a strap, and they took a little box, and they put the Hebrew Scriptures on a little tiny scroll, and they put it in a box.
And they closed the box, and they walked around with this little box on their head to keep reminding them to keep the commandments of God. Very interesting! Maybe you have seen some pictures? Orthodox Jews will do it today.
So, what He is saying is, and it is called a phylactery. They don't just have a little box here. The Pharisees have like "apple crates" you know? That is how spiritual I am, look at my phylactery!
Matthew 22:18 - But Jesus perceived their wickedness, and said, Why tempt ye me, ye hypocrites?
Jesus is not name calling. Hypocrite is a theater term, or an acting term. Every time an actor/actress would read their script, or perform according to the script, they were called HUPOCRISIS, hypocrites. It wasn't a bad word. But when applied to religious people, what you're saying is "you're just acting!" You're just acting out according to the script, but inside it's not true, it's not real. What the Lord is saying is that you actors come in here with all of this flattery, and all of your craftiness, and you're trying to set me up.
Matthew 22:37 - Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
Two things I'd like to emphasize: First, the term "Thou shalt love" is not in command form. It is a Future Active Indicative in the Greek text. It's not a command. It's a factual statement. You will love!
Secondly, if you understand the concept, you can apply it to every teaching that applies to the church, and to believers today. For instance, believers are supposed to love one another. But, neither in the OT, nor in the NT, is it in command form. It's interesting that when the Lord quotes Deuteronomy 6:5, He quotes it exactly and says the first commandment is this: "You shall love the Lord your God."
But taking it a little further from a Greek perspective, notice the word "with." Love the Lord your God WITH all your heart and WITH all your soul and WITH all your mind. Well, it is the Greek word EN, which means in. All three prepositional phrases are "in." You will love the Lord your God in your whole heart, in your whole soul, and in your whole mind.
Do you see the location? I am not going to love with it. I am going to be in it. It is going to be in me, in my inner being. That is how it is literally translated in the Greek.
Luke 13:16 does show that this woman was bound by Satan, but it does not imply that he is responsible for all our illnesses.
In those days, it was a common philosophy among the Jews that if a person was suffering physically, it was because they have sinned or were not right with God. But this woman's physical condition was caused by a demon. This woman had a spirit of infirmity for eighteen years, and she did not have the ability to lift herself up. She walked along and she was almost bent in half and her head was down towards the ground as she was walking.
But what's important to know, and this might answer the question on if the devil is responsible for our illnesses, but not all illnesses or infirmities are caused by demons or Satan. If you remember back in John 9:1-3 about this blind man, the disciples asked, "Who sinned, this man, or his parents that he was born blind?" Jesus answered and said neither!
But you see, that was their philosophy. Their way of thinking was that the only reason that somebody suffers physically is because they have sinned or maybe their parents did, so they are suffering for it. Not all sickness and illness have to do with sin or that somebody has done something wrong. But there are specific things, especially in Jesus' day, that when a person was demonized, possessed by a demon, it also meant that the demon was holding them in prison in some kind of a physical way.
A question for any one and every one : Like Ch 13 verses 11-16 , v 11 what does it mean that the woman had a spirit of infirmity ? and v 16 this woman whom satan hath bound , is this implying that the devil is responsible for our illnesses ? Interested to know what you all think about this miracle and the words used to describe it .
Hello Dear Sister , if you don't mind , may I ask you a question ? You don't have to answer me , I shan't be offended if you choose not to . What do you believe is the ultimate fate of all those people who never got the opportunity ( for whatever reason ) to ever hear one word about God or Jesus ? What happens to their souls ?
Does any one have an opinion or idea about , what baptism is Jesus referring to in Luke Ch 12 verse 50 ? I have my own idea but was just wondering what others think of it .
And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.
"All that dwell upon upon the earth" refers to a specific period The two witnesses would finish their testimony and rapture has closed the door for those remaining on the earth. Jesus forewarned of the time of the Gentiles. " But this is your hour, and the power of darkness." ( Luke 22:53) The day of salvation shall be continued in heaven where Christ is seated on the right hand of the most High. So the hour and half an hour are all signs under which the nations shall continue.
Those whose names are in the book of life are those little children whose souls are in safekeeping. "Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous." This righteousness are in their submission to the indwelling Spirit. As many as are led by the Spirit are the sons of God. The just shall live by faith where living according to the leading of the Spirit are the works. The book of life and the names constitute a holy nation peculiar people and the Spirit gives them tags as in this verse, "an hundred forty and four thousand, having his Father's name written in their foreheads." (14:1)
Satan is a great copy cat and we see Satan also his seat authority set and power. The unclean spirit works with all three. Frogs explain the league of the beast false prophet and dragon. "For they are the spirits of devils, working miracles, which go forth unto the kings of the earth and of the whole world." Take any King, President or Kaiser, glory gold and violence are what they unleash. The people of the earth who receive the mark has a sign recorded with Satan as being sold to do their bidding. So those whose names are not in the book of the Lamb are destined to the lake of fire. Free will sets before man: Either or.
My prayer are still with you and our God, our wonderful Savior is with you in all this darkness and trouble. Jesus is the marvelous light and destroys darkness. Be strong and God will rid this place of the devils work and there will be peace there for you and all those involved. TRUST GOD! God Bless :)
My prayers are with you and I know what you are going through. My son had the same thing happen to him and his daughter is still not serving the Lord, but God's will, will be done for her and we have great hope for her salvation. As you continue to pray for your daughter, also TRUST God that your prayers will be answered. God Bless :)
This is the wrath of God upon the dragon, the beast and the false prophet. Nations received a mark, and the mark is distince as the colour of skin" so their waking hours were taken by fear of being overtaken by men which were not of us. Wealth culture beliefs were all such mark so wrath of God would visit "upon the men which had the mark of the beast, and upon them which worshipped his image."(16:2) What with false prophet actively keeping the discord going on we have Jeremiah's question, "Can the Ethiopian change his skin, or the leopard his spots? then may ye also do good, that are accustomed to do evil."(Je.13:23) God knows who are his and in our times the imposter churches work to hold truth in unrighteousness.
Do nations stand a chance against the Righteous God? "Can two walk together, except they be agreed?" The beast and the false prophet are thus allies since it the devil's cause they are promoting.
Instead of reading the Bible by the Spirit in us and working with him for the glory of God we have time wasters who ever learns the shades of meaning from different texts. It is also a ploy from submitting totally to the Spirit. They know Greek or Hebrew text but the devil prevents them from converting it into understanding. They also are appointed for the wrath of God.
And I saw three unclean spirits like frogs come out of the mouth of the dragon, and out of the mouth of the beast, and out of the mouth of the false prophet.
14 For they are the spirits of devils, working miracles, which go forth unto the kings of the earth and of the whole world, to gather them to the battle of that great day of God Almighty.
St John reveals the wrath is for those who remain on the earth. The seven angels signify their vials are to punish those who have rejected the covenant of God with Man. St Paul referring to the gospel of Christ sums up the specific nations. "The just shall live by faith./For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness;" (Ro.1:17-18) Firstly frogs are amphibians and the beast is an inhabitant of the sea. "And saw a beast rise up out of the sea" while the false prophet, "And I beheld another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had two horns like a lamb, and he spake as a dragon."(13:11). He is of a different sort, "and he had two horns like a lamb, and he spake as a dragon." He quoted from the word of God but his explanations were all in unrighteousness, so indirectly he has been laying axe to the tree planted by God, the tree of righteousness. He was in all qualities a frog serving both God and mammon.
The seven angels as tagged by the Spirit tell such frogs have been thriving even before nations came in existence. Serpent beguiled Eve through her senses. The same we find in the manner the old world corrupted themselves. The Sons of God who were beguiled by daughters of men so their progeny would a race of prodigious prowess. "The same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown" and have we changed now with the culture wars actively fought by Christian nationalism? The devil sins from the beginning so these seven angels are representing the generation of Jesus Christ.
You write,"Jesus was the fulfillment of God's promise to Abraham." That is not how the Spirit has organized the God document. First Jesus's assertion:"Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you". Healso says, "Before Abraham was I am." (Jojn 15:16) St Paul also speaks, "God chose us before the worlds began." So what is keeping the lie of God's promise to Abraham as the beginning of blessings when the blessings began with God's command 'Let us make man 'in our image and after our lieness.' God blessed them'. The emblem of 'the slain Lamb before the foundation of the world' informs us there were many things going on in heaven before Abraham was chosen. Melchizedek the Priest of the most high coming to greet Abraham was confirmation of Gods promise. Bread and wine he brought are symbolic, it points out Jesus Christ the high priest of our profession was foreordained.'
With regards to the temple being built in heaven, the matter of the holy place in the middle escaped me. The sea of glass, of sand on which St John has an altar for souls. The martyrs crying from below comes from mid-heaven. Od them we haven in this verse. "And I saw as it were a sea of glass mingled with fire: and them that had gotten the victory over the beast, and over his image, and over his mark, and over the number of his name, stand on the sea of glass, having the harps of God." (Re.15:2) They are waiting, you see. After the great tribulation also there shall batches of martyrs and they have their place in the holy place. The court is for the Gentiles, the mingled people as in the Book of Ezra, both Israel and the gentiles
Perhaps I can explain the matter of 14 generations in the gospel of St Matthew. There are three sets of 14 each and it gives us 14x3=42 . This serves no other purpose that a number. The Spirit sets tags in order to make his meaning clear. He is not giving the family tree as such but presenting the prince of life in direct context of every man who comes into the world. Consequently nations of Israel and the Gentiles.
I shall cite the number as used in the Bible. 2 Ki.2 As Elisha would go to Bethel number of children jeered at his baldness. "They hated me without cause" Jesus' quote. 42 is with reference to Israel. In Re.11 we have the court "and the holy city shall they tread under foot forty and two months." The temple is built in heaven with Most holy pace up, holy place below and the court on the earth. The Court belongs to Israel and the Gentiles both shallface the great tribulation. So Israel is once again under the tag 42. (Re.11:2) The reason lies in the beast with whom Israel shall have concord. The authority of the beast is from the great dragon and it is tagged as 42 as in v.5 "And there was given unto him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies; and power was given unto him to continue forty and two months."(Re.13-5-6) Red dragon against saints in heaven. Who are they? Martyrs who were killed by Israel. So from Abel onwards all the martyrs, prophets and saints were killed before time for their testimony. That brings to the question. Why would Israel shed innocent blood or hate them without cause? The Spirit of the dragon, Satan who sins from the beginning. The conclusion is inescapable- 42 is a tag set on the complicity of the nation with devil. St May not have had any awareness why he arrived at the number. The Spirit chose it for him. For that matter the Number 3, a tag for the Son.
Well, I must say that it's the kind of trouble I don't mind being in!
Thanks for that information. I know there are differences between modern Greek and koine Greek. I have not studied modern Greek at all. I was only taught koine. I was taught by a gentleman who has been in the ministry for over 50 years and has extensive training and knowledge in Biblical languages, both Greek and Hebrew. He served for several years as Professor of Biblical Greek at Master's Graduate School of Divinity. Very trustworthy teacher of Biblical languages. I myself did not attend Master's Graduate School where he taught. He now pastors a small community church on the west coast in California, where I used to live. That is where I was blessed to meet him and learn from him. Anyways, I know I am sharing too much and what I've just shared probably has no meaning for anyone else. But I do want to thank you for sharing your knowledge, especially with modern Greek! Someday (Lord willing), I may study some modern Greek.
I do not have any questions at the moment. I may hit you up later if you have any knowledge with Greek word association diagrams. Those are somewhat confusing to me!
Matthew 22:9 - Go ye therefore into the highways, and as many as ye shall find, bid to the marriage.
Go ye therefore into the highways, literally in the Greek Text, it's a phrase that means the connective highways outside of the city. Outside of cities, they had these connecting links where you could go down the main road and there would be an off-road that would come into the city.
But at the intersection of all these highways and roads out there is where all the traffic was going. It's much like our freeway systems that go right by town, if you want to get off at a certain town, you just take the off ramp. If you want to do any kind of good business, you go out on highways and you go outside the city to all this traffic that's going by. Most people walked or they took wagons, or horses, or something so they would see you off on the side of the road. But it's that connecting link of highways outside of the city that's mentioned in the Greek text.
Matthew 22:10 - So those servants went out into the highways, and gathered together all as many as they found, both bad and good: and the wedding was furnished with guests.
Bad is the word PONAYROS. These are not bad people. These were evil people! And the good is AGATHOS, Good people. So, its God's people, and the evil, sinners. He says to gather everybody up.
It says that the wedding was furnished with guests. Our English text makes it sound like the wedding was furnished with people. The word guests here means recliners. They would always recline. They would lean on one elbow and have their feet lying backwards away from the table and with one hand they would eat.
That's why in John's Gospel, it talks about the disciple leaning back on Jesus' bosom to ask Him a question. It's because he's leaning back, and Jesus was right behind him so he could ask Him the question. They were all reclining at the table.
Matthew 21:9 - And the multitudes that went before, and that followed, cried, saying, Hosanna to the Son of David: Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord; Hosanna in the highest.
Hosanna is a Hebrew word that means "save now." It is a compound Hebrew word HOSHEA, which means save, and NA which means now. So, they are saying Hosanna to the Son of David. And again, that is a term for Messiah. "Save Now Messiah" is what they are singing. Blessed is he that comes in the name of the Lord; Hosanna in the highest. They are singing praise to Him.
Matthew 21:10 - And when he was come into Jerusalem, all the city was moved, saying, Who is this?
The Greek word for moved is SEISMOS. That is where we get seismology from, the study of earth movement. You have to remember that there are a few million people in Jerusalem, wall-to-wall people. And they're going who is this? What is going on here? Singing messianic praises to this man and giving him a dignitary's welcome into Jerusalem. So, they are saying, who is this?
Matthew 22:2 - The kingdom of heaven is like unto a certain king, which made a marriage for his son,
The kingdom of heaven is like unto a certain king (so this is now royalty), which made a marriage for his son.
I want to emphasize the word GAMOS that is used here, because it is not a wedding. It is a wedding feast. The wedding is part of it, but we are talking here about the festivities that are at least seven days and can be 10 or 14 days.
Matthew 20:9 - And when they came that were hired about the eleventh hour, they received every man a penny.
So those that came at the 11th hour, that would be 5 o'clock, they received every man a full day's wage. They remembered that the landowner told them "I'll pay you what is right,"
Matthew 20:10 - But when the first came, they supposed that they should have received more; and they likewise received every man a penny.
And by now, this text tells us that the people who came at the beginning, that they saw the people who started work at 5 o'clock get a denarius, and they are saying "Well, that's what he was going to give us, but they have only worked for an hour." Just think what we are going to get! But when the first people came, they supposed that they should have received more; and they likewise received every man a denarius.
Matthew 20:15 - Is it not lawful for me to do what I will with mine own? Is thine eye evil, because I am good?
Again, this word good is the word AGATHOS. This word is only applied to the good of God. KALOS is humanitarian good.
Matthew 20:30 - And, behold, two blind men sitting by the way side, when they heard that Jesus passed by, cried out, saying, Have mercy on us, O Lord, thou Son of David.
Now both Mark and Luke, they focus on one of these blind men. And his name is Bartimaeus. They don't mention the second one, but Matthew does. They heard that Jesus is passing by. And please keep in mind that they are blind. So, they cried out.
And that's the word for shout because you can imagine that there are a lot of people there. And what the crowds would try to do is just push the crippled and the blind to the side and get them out of the way.
So, they're shouting. Have mercy on us, O Lord, thou Son of David. First of all, they asked for mercy. And second of all, they call Him the son of David and that is a Messianic term. What they are saying is "Have mercy on us Messiah!"
Matthew 19:16 - And, behold, one came and said unto him, Good Master, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life?
The word good in this verse is the word AGATHON which comes from AGATHOS which in English means good. But there are different Greek words for the term good. This particular word is the good of God. It's the good that the Holy Spirit produces. When Jesus went about doing good, He didn't do KALOS, (humanitarian good). He went around doing AGATHOS. That is, He was touching people's souls, their spirits.
This man comes up to Jesus and says, Good teacher. He didn't say KALOS, like we would use today if we were to say he or she is a good teacher. This man is saying AGATHOS, good. What AGATHOS thing shall I do that I may have eternal life?
Matthew 19:17 - And he said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God: but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments.
Jesus says to him is, why did you call me AGATHOS? There is none AGATHOS but one, and that's God. So, Jesus is saying do you realize you just called me God? Do you know why you called me that?
Matthew 19:22 - But when the young man heard that saying, he went away sorrowful: for he had great possessions.
The word for sorrowful is the word grieved. He was so hurt that he was in pain, for he had great possessions.
Matthew 20:2 - And when he had agreed with the labourers for a penny a day, he sent them into his vineyard.
Please don't get the wrong idea about a penny being like one cent. It is actually a DENARIUS. That is the Greek word, and it means one day's wage. It is equal to about 17 or 18 cents of our money which was pretty good back then. It was the normal wage per day for a Roman soldier. So, these guys are getting paid pretty good. He says I'll contract with you for a DENARIUS if you work for me today in my field. So off they went!
Well brother you got yourself in trouble by studying greek.
I am not a scholar but I will say what I have read about genesis and gennesis.
Genesis is related to the verb "gignomai" which means "to be made of". Gennesis comes from the verb "gennao" which means "to give birth". Genesis is not used in mod grk unless we reffer to the book of Genesis. But gennesis and genao are what we say for birth and giving birth. Because those two words are very similar most grks think that genesis means birth, which is wrong.
Now about the double N, I don't know how the anc grks used to pronounce it. In mod grk it is pronounced las a single N. Modern grk as well as Koine grk follow the orthography of anc grk but with different pronunciation. The "eta" letter was pronounced in classical times as a long "eh" and in mod grk as an "ee". The "epsilon" is pronounced as a short "eh"
But things are more complicated than that.
But how did the greeks of Jesus' time pronounce grk letters? As I can understand you (as well as Strong's concordance) use the classical pronounciation, that is from 3rd to 5th century BC. But by Jesus' time the pronunciation had changed dramatically. And Koine(common) greek was closer to mod grk than classical grk, although it carries many elements from clas grk. So genesis in clasical grk is Geh-neh-sis and gennesis as geh-neh(long)-sis(I don't know about the double N). And in mod grk genesis as Yeh-neh-sis, and gennesis as Yeh-nee-sis(both stressed at yeh). Very similar and because of that confusing. Well I don't want to discourage you with your studies in the grk language but I wish you good luck. Just joking. If you want to ask me something else I will answer tomorrow. It is 1:30 am here. Blessings.
Matthew 18:19 - Again I say unto you, That if two of you shall agree on earth as touching any thing that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven.
The word "agree" is the word SUMPHONAY, and it's where we get our English word symphony from. It doesn't mean that if we get together and agree on something that that will create some kind of a magical formula that causes God's Spirit to go out and do things.
What a dangerous place this would be if that formula were given to us, and it was true. "Let's just agree on it! I have some things, so let's get together and agree on it and see what happens!" Can you see the danger? It means that if two of you shall be in harmony together as touching anything that you ask, it shall be done for them which is from my Father in heaven. He's talking about the unity in the body of Christ. There's only one message, and only one song that is being played by the Symphony.
There are many different parts. Your function is different than mine, but we are all playing the same song. If I offend you, and you decide to play your own song right in the middle of our song, we're going to have problems. God will not answer prayer if there's not harmony because I am praying one way, and you are praying another. I'm praying against you and you against me.
Matthew 19:14 - But Jesus said, Suffer little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me: for of such is the kingdom of heaven.
Suffer in Greek means allow. What's interesting is the verb tenses. Jesus said, allow the little children. That's an Aorist Tense. Basically, He is saying once and for all, immediately, I'm telling you, allow the little children and do not forbid them. The verb tense for forbid is in the Present Tense, Present Imperative. What Jesus is literally saying is "Stop forbidding them to come to me." They were continually doing it, and Jesus says, "for of such is the kingdom of heaven."
I think the genealogy of Jesus listed in Matthew 1 has the purpose of showing to us that He descends from King David, thus Jesus was the fulfillment of God's promise to Abraham. If you notice carefully the list says that all the generations from David until the carrying away into Babylon are fourteen generations. Which are not. If one checks the list of kings during that period of time from the books of Kings they would realize that the list ommits few kings in order to end up with the number 14. I don't know why Matthew did that. Maybe because he wanted to end up with 3 sums of 14. Maybe for easeness to remember? But the list is not precise. Also we don't know where he got Jesus' genealogy after the Hebrews were brought to Babylon. Where there written records of generations in the Hebrew state written records? Did Matthew manipulate those records as well so to come up again with the number 14? Or not? Who knows?
The Christian Bible since ancient times, borrowed the titles of the various books of the Old Testament from the Septuagint. So even Bibles which use the Masoretic text still use the Septuagint titles. And they just translitarated the names from grk to English. So: Genesis-Genesis, Exodos(Exit)-Exodus, Arithmoi(numbers)-Numbers, Levitikon-Leviticus, Deuteronomion(Second Law)-Deuteronomy and so on. There are few differences though with the Septuagint. Those are: Jesus of Naui-Joshua(of Nan), Song of Songs-Song of Solomon, Also Samuel 1 and Samuel 2 are Kings 1 and Kings 2 in the Sept. And Kings 1 and Kings 2 are Kings 3 and Kings 4 in the Sept. Also the christian bibles follows the order of the books in the Sept. which is different from the order of books in the Masoretic.
The title of the first book in Hebrew is "Beresit" which means "in the begining" and was translated by the Sept as "Genesis". The very precise meaning of Genesis is "making form the begining" and it refers to the creation of the physical world from the very begining. GBU
Matthew 17:19 - Then came the disciples to Jesus apart, and said, Why could not we cast him out?
The word could is the word ability in the Greek text. Why did we not have the ability, the capacity?
Matthew 17:20 - And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.
Notice this because in the Greek it is literally "You are without faith." It specifically says you have none.
Matthew 17:21 - Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting.
Just general information to share about Verse 21. If you are into following manuscripts, it is an addition. It is not in some manuscripts. But it actually describes what Jesus said about praying.
Matthew 17:23 - And they shall kill him, and the third day he shall be raised again. And they were exceeding sorry.
The word sorry is the word LUPAY, that means grief. They were exceedingly grieved. Remember before Peter rebuked Him when he said it. There's a difference between being sorry and being grieved!
Matthew 17:27 - Notwithstanding, lest we should offend them, go thou to the sea, and cast an hook, and take up the fish that first cometh up; and when thou hast opened his mouth, thou shalt find a piece of money: that take, and give unto them for me and thee.
Again, offend (which I previously shared) is the word SCANDALON, or SCANDALIDZO, lest we be the rock that they trip over in coming to the truth.
Matthew 16:24 - Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.
Now the word deny (ARNEOMAI), means to reject. This is what it means in the Greek. The word deny seems a little soft. It means to reject yourself.
Matthew 17:2 - And was transfigured before them: and his face did shine as the sun, and his raiment was white as the light.
A more accurate word would be transformed rather than transfigured. In fact, it is the Greek where we get our English word metamorphosis from. He was completely changed in form and in substance. He was transformed before them.
Matthew 17:6 - And when the disciples heard it, they fell on their face, and were sore afraid.
In my humble opinion, the translators could have saved us some time here. Sore is from the word SFODRA that means exceedingly. They were terrified!
Matthew 17:15 - Lord, have mercy on my son: for he is lunatick, and sore vexed: for ofttimes he falleth into the fire, and oft into the water.
I love the way these people come. They are asking for mercy. They are asking for compassion. They are not demanding it. For he is a lunatick. That is the Greek word for "moon-struck." Our term lunatic comes from lunar. There are people who suffer, or have behavioral times, or phases, based on the various phases of the moon. That is where the term lunatic, "acting like a lunatic" comes from, Lunar.
Matthew 17:17 - Then Jesus answered and said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer you? bring him hither to me.
Faithless means completely without faith. They were not lacking faith. They had none! The word "suffer" means to uphold or support. How long am I going to be around you? How long am I going to be the one that's supporting you, and you keep going to other people?
You have not discouraged me at all. As I have stated, I do value your input on the Greek language. Whether it be your intention to correct or not correct me, if I am in error with what I am sharing, I need to be corrected and shown why. Plus, and not to discredit anyone else here, but it means more coming from someone like you who has known the language their entire life.
I do have a couple questions for you. You gave the meanings of both Genesis and Gennesis, but why the double "nu" and why the eta instead of epsilon? How or why does this change the meaning of the word? Does adding the additional letter "nu" change the pronunciation of the word? I know in Koine Greek, the double gamma "yy" is pronounced with an "ng" sound, but why the double "nu" in Gennesis? Any help you can provide on this would be appreciated.
Continuation in Matthew, (Part 28):
Hope this helps!
Blessings!
Continuation in Matthew, (Part 20):
Thanks, brother!
