7And he arose, and departed to his house. 8But when the multitudes saw it, they marueiled, & glorified God, which had giuen such power vnto men. 9¶ And as Iesus passed forth from thence, he saw a man named Matthew, sitting at the receite of custome: and he saith vnto him, Follow me. And he arose and followed him. 10¶ And it came to passe, as Iesus sate at meate in the house, behold, many publicanes and sinners, came and sate downe with him and his Disciples. 11And when the Pharisees saw it, they said vnto his disciples, Why eateth your master with publicanes & sinners.

9:9 He saw a man named Matthew - Modestly so called by himself. The other evangelists call him by his more honourable name, Levi. Sitting - In the very height of his business, at the receipt of custom - The custom house, or place where the customs were received. #Mark 2:14|; Luke 5:27.

Mt 9:9 Saw a man, named Matthew. Compare Mr 2:13-17 Lu 5:27-32. Such is the modest introduction of himself that Matthew gives. He was also called Levi (Lu 5:27). At the receipt of custom. He was a tax collector, a publican, whose business it was to collect the Roman taxes. Follow me. Like Peter, Andrew, James and John, he was called from his business, and left at once. Like them, he was probably a disciple of John, and before this a disciple of Jesus, but now called to apostleship. Arose, and followed. Thus promptly the call of Jesus ought always to be obeyed.
