1And it came to passe in those dayes, that there went out a decree from Cesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed. 2(And this taxing was first made whē Cyrenius was gouernor of Syria) 3And all went to bee taxed, euery one into his owne citie. 4And Ioseph also wēt vp frō Galilee, out of the citie of Nazareth, into Iudea, vnto the citie of Dauid, which is called Bethlehem, (because he was of the house and linage of Dauid,) 5To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child.

Lu 2:3 Every one into his own city. It was the Jewish custom to enroll by tribes and families. Joseph was of the family of David, and would have to be enrolled where the family had its landed inheritance.
