14This is nowe the third time that Iesus shewed himselfe to his disciples, after that hee was risen from the dead. 15¶ So when they had dined, Iesus saith to Simon Peter, Simon, sonne of Ionas, louest thou mee more then these? He saith vnto him, Yea, Lord, thou knowest that I loue thee. He saith vnto him, Feed my lambes. 16He saith to him againe the second time, Simon sonne of Ionas, louest thou me? Joh 21:16 Feed my sheep. A second time the Lord probes Peter with the question. Let it be noted that he does not call him "Peter", "the rock" (Mt 16:18), any longer. So frail a disciple could only be called Simon. The Christ again commissions him to work, "Feed my sheep". Not only the lambs, but he may look after the sheep of the fold, watch over the disciples of the Lord, young and old. Three times Peter had denied the Master (Mt 26:70,72,74); three times the Master questions his love; three times he gives him charge concerning his work (Joh 21:15-17). The questioning was painful, Peter was grieved, but the grief was wholesome, and Peter's whole subsequent life bore proof of the discipline. His rashness was forever gone.
