3Now ye are cleane through the word which I haue spoken vnto you. 4Abide in me, and in you: As the branch cannot beare fruit of itselfe, except it abide in the vine: no more can ye, except ye abide in me. 5I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can doe nothing. 6If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered, and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned. 7If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall aske what ye will, and it shall be done vnto you.

15:5 I am the vine, ye are the branches - Our Lord in this whole passage speaks of no branches but such as are, or at least were once, united to him by living faith.

Joh 15:5 I am the vine, ye [are] the branches. He has already declared (Joh 15:1) that he is the True Vine, but he had not before declared that every disciple is a branch of the Vine. Observe that, not denominations, but church members, are the branches. The disciple, without Christ, "can do nothing". Paul declared, "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me" (Php 4:13).
