3For we which haue beleeued do enter into rest, as hee said, As I haue sworne in my wrath, if they shall enter into my rest, although the works were finished from the foundation of the world. 4For he spake in a certaine place of the seuenth day on this wise: And God did rest the seuenth day from all his works. 5And in this place againe: If they shall enter into my rest. 6Seeing therfore it remaineth that some must enter therein, and they to whom it was first preached, entred not in because of vnbeleefe: 7Againe, hee limiteth a certaine day, saying in Dauid, To day, after so long a time; as it is saide, To day if ye will heare his voyce, harden not your hearts.

Heb 4:5 And in this [place] again, If they shall enter into my rest. In Ps 95:11, which declares that Israel should not enter into God's rest. Though Israel had kept the rest of the Sabbath, they had not entered into God's rest, as this language shows. The rest of the Sabbath is not then the promised rest, nor is Canaan below, from which nearly all Israel was once excluded, because David exhorts the people, though in Canaan, to enter into the rest.
